Decorating With Plaid For Fall

Creative ways to add fall plaid decor to your home to infuse your living spaces with warmth and character, making it the epitome of fall coziness.

I am simply mad for plaid and now’s the time of year to bring it! Give me all the flannel shirts.

Be sure to go to the end for an unexpected fun way to use plaid. 😉

In my book, you only need small doses of plaid in a room though.  As much as I love anything plaid, too much plaid is, well, too much.

Put Plaid On Your Table

I love to use chargers when I set a table and when I ran across these a few years ago, I bought every single one they had!

With Thanksgiving on the horizon, plaid chargers will add just the right touch of plaid to your table setting.

Sadly, these specific ones are no longer available, but I’ve linked several other ones below the image.

Chargers aren’t just for table setting either. I love these so much that I even used them as decor on the open shelves that used to be in my breakfast room.

Technically, buffalo check is also considered a plaid pattern. A simple gray and white checked runner, added to this table, allows all of the fall colored dinnerware to be the star of the show.

You might notice that I used leaf print napkins at the head of the table and mixed in buffalo checked dinner napkins at the other place settings.

Here are some my current favorite plaid table runners that would look beautiful on a fall table.

Add Some Plaid To Your Pumpkins

One of my favorite fall centerpieces featured a plaid pumpkin along with a few other fall’ish elements.

It is a great plaid colorway that goes with everything. I’ve linked several more plaid pumpkins below.

Look at how creative you can get with some washi tape and pumpkins!

For a while, washi tape was being using all over the crafting world. I still think it’s a great, easy to use product!

Of course, you can always make your own! Julie at My Wee Abode has one of the best pumpkin making tutorials, with professional results that I’ve seen. Simply swap out velvet fabric for plaid – might I suggest flannel?

Versatile Fall Plaid Throw Blankets

No self respecting plaid lover would dare to dream of decorating for fall without including fall throw blankets! They have to be one of THE most versaltile pieces of home decor there is.

A large throw makes a great “tablecloth” for a fall picnic.

Casually throw (pun intended) one across your bed for instant fall coziness. Even better if you pair it with a plaid pillow.

Keep one draped over a chair on a covered porch to keep you toasty while relaxing outside with your favorite hot beverage.

And last, but not least…don’t forget to decorate your sheep.  Sorry…gotta have a little fun!

  1. I love plaid!! It may be “in” this year but I think it’s timeless! I really like the idea of covering your books — Is that paper or fabric?

    1. Hi Marisa. The blog that I pulled this idea from says that it’s paper that they wrapped the books in and applied ModPodge to. You’re right – it’s hard to tell from the photo if it’s paper or fabric. And I agree with you – plaid is timeless.

I love plaid during the Christmas season. Those sheep are so funny!

    1. I thought so too, Penny. What a crazy idea! Wonder if anyone really did that.

  3. I love touches of plaid, Suzy! It is such a classic and timeless pattern. My hubby has been noticing all of the plaid shirts for men in department stores recently. In fact, he bought several yesterday! It has emerged as a hot fashion trend this season; but, it’s always been in style!

    1. You’re right, Shenita – plaid is one of the few classics that never seems to go out of style. I’m old enough to remember the old flannel plaid shirts from the 70’s. They were a hot item!

  4. I love plaid too! I love all these ideas, especially the table lamp! So cute!

    1. Thanks for stopping by, Maria. Glad to “meet” another plaid lover!

  5. Love that plaid lampshade! Oh, and those sheep too!

    1. I never knew that I wanted some sheep until I saw those! ;-P

  8. Love your ideas.
But at this moment I am still in Greece and here is still summer 🤗
But when I‘m back home next week I think I will need a lot of cozy blankets or even a fire in the oven in the evening 🙋‍♀️

The sheep photo is cracking me up! Love that, and all your cozy fall plaid accents. Such cute ideas Suzy! Thanks for the mention too. Hugs!
