6 Reasons You Need Greenery Or Flowers {Real Or Faux} In Your Home Right Now

As I move about my home, going about my day, I’ve realized that I have some sort of greenery or flowers in almost every room.  Most of them are faux – I’m terrible at keeping fresh flowers watered and houseplants alive!  Some of them change with the season and others stay the same year round.

Now, I know that the current decorating trends say “no faux allowed”, but I beg to differ.  {And who cares about so called trends anyway?  Can I get an amen?}

So with that in mind, here are my thoughts on why every home needs a bit of greenery or flowers.

1. GREENERY AND FLOWERS CAN PULL A ROOM TOGETHER

Have you ever worked and worked on a room only to have it fall flat?  You think that all of the elements are there, but the room doesn’t have any life to it, isn’t cohesive or just doesn’t look finished?  Me too.  Maybe what you need is a touch of greenery or a little touch of florals.  There’s something about adding a living element {even if it’s faux} that says “done”.

My family room has greenery scattered throughout.  A burlap tote on the hearth is filled with an overflowing bunch of tulips as a nod to the season.  In my eyes, the room would be flat without the added texture and color.

2. SOMETHING ORGANIC {AGAIN, REAL OR FAUX} CAN BOOST YOUR MOOD

There’s no way around it – flowers just say “happy”.  It has been found that people with flowers or plants in their home are less likely to feel worried or anxious.  In fact, so many studies have been done on this subject that the Society Of American Florists labeled flowers as vitamin F!  And we all need some of that.

I may be bleary eyed and grumpy first thing in the morning, but having a few grocery store flowers near my coffee pot immediately puts me in a better frame of mind – even before my first cup of coffee.  Now that’s power!

3. FLOWERS AND GREENERY WELCOME YOUR GUESTS

By placing flowers or plants in places that visitors see, you are saying “I’m happy you’re here. Come in and feel at home”.  And just think, every time you walk through the door or by the flowers, you’ll feel at home too.

4. PLANTS AND FLOWERS DOUBLE AS EVERYDAY DECOR

Coordinate the flowers with the colors in your space.  Or add them for a pop of color and to draw the eye.  I used a bunch of dried hydrangeas in my dining room to draw the eye up to the display on my vintage shelf.

5. THEY MAKE IT EASY TO DECORATE FOR A SEASON OR HOLIDAY

When you see bunches of pine branches, what do you immediately think of?  Why, Christmas of course.  Or how about the rustic golds and oranges of fall?

6. ORGANIC ELEMENTS SUCH AS PLANTS AND FLOWERS INSPIRE CREATIVITY

Flowers and plants have been shown to stimulate creativity.  Try adding flowers to a spot where you gather or work and see if they don’t add a spark of imagination and creativity.

  7. Such pretty vignettes with the greenery. I use faux most of the time indoors. I LOVE having dried lavender around the house all year. What size is the boxwood wreath around your pig head?

  8. You are so right about needing greenery in every room! Mine is all fake too, but I like the way it looks. My only complaint is how quickly it seems to attract dust.

I also love plants, greenery and decorating with nature. I am excited to pull out my nests and little finch eggs that I have collected. Thank you for a great blog. I do enjoy reading it and love the photos.

I also have faux greenery, for the same reason— I forget about them until they die of thirst or I drown them. Love how you have incorporated the ‘green touch’ in your rooms.

  13. Thanks for the tips, Suzy. I just arranged a faux succulent planter for my living area. I’m quite happy with it… just need seem white pebbles to complete the arrangement. 🙂 I think greenery really DOES bring life to any area.
