It’s officially been spring for a few weeks now and everyone that I know is working to freshen their homes.  Myself included!  There’s just something uplifting about putting the heavy blankets away and fluffing the pillows, so to speak.

Let’s take a look at how your home (and you!) actually benefit from adding greenery or flowers to your home.

As I move about my home, going about my day, I’ve realized that I have some sort of greenery or flowers in almost every room.  Most of them are faux – I’m terrible at keeping fresh flowers watered and houseplants alive!

Some of them change with the season and others stay the same year round.  I think that adding something organic to a room brings it to life!

Now, I know that the current decorating trends say “no faux allowed”, but I beg to differ.  {And who cares about so called trends anyway?  Can I get an amen?}

So with that in mind, here are my thoughts on why every home needs a bit of bright greenery or flowers.

1. GREENERY AND FLOWERS CAN PULL A ROOM TOGETHER

Have you ever worked and worked on a room only to have it fall flat?  You think that all of the elements are there, but the room doesn’t have any life to it, isn’t cohesive or just doesn’t look finished?  Me too.

Maybe what you need is a touch of greenery or a little touch of florals.  There’s something about adding a living element {even if it’s faux} that says “done”.

Here’s my family room when I had it decorated in farmhouse style. Even then, there was greenery scattered throughout.  A burlap tote on the hearth is filled with an overflowing bunch of tulips as a nod to the season.  In my eyes, the room would be flat without the added texture and color.

2. SOMETHING ORGANIC {AGAIN, REAL OR FAUX} CAN BOOST YOUR MOOD

There’s no way around it – flowers just say “happy”.  It has been found that people with pretty flowers or plants in their homes are less likely to feel worried or anxious.

In fact, so many studies have been done on this subject that the Society Of American Florists labeled flowers as vitamin F.  And we all need some of that!

I may be bleary eyed and grumpy first thing in the morning, but having a few grocery store flowers near my coffee pot immediately puts me in a better frame of mind – even before my first cup of coffee.  Now that’s flower power!

3. FLOWERS AND GREENERY WELCOME YOUR GUESTS

By placing flowers or plants in places that visitors see, you are saying “I’m happy you’re here. Come in and feel at home”.

And just think, every time you walk through the door or by the flowers, you’ll feel at home too.

4. PLANTS AND FLOWERS DOUBLE AS EVERYDAY DECOR

Coordinate the flowers with the colors in your space.  Or add them for a pop of color and to draw the eye.

Just look at how happy an arrangement of faux hydrangeas makes my family room!

5. THEY MAKE IT EASY TO DECORATE FOR A SEASON OR HOLIDAY

Speaking of flowers……adding faux floral stems to the existing greenery stems on my mantel says instant spring.

6. ORGANIC ELEMENTS SUCH AS PLANTS AND FLOWERS INSPIRE CREATIVITY

Flowers and plants have been shown to stimulate creativity.  Try adding greenery or flowers to a spot where you gather or work and see if they don’t add a bright spark of imagination and creativity.

So tell me what you think.  Do you agree that having flowers or plants, even if they’re faux, is important in your home?

I can’t imagine my apartment without them. I want to get a live plant to clean the air, too.

  2. I I like everything you do except for the grapevine wreaths. Using one is original but more can get boring.

  3. I totally agree that greenery/florals need to be used in decorating. It brings another element of texture and beauty to the home. I recently put a bluebird/forget-me-not in a standing planter out on my Wee Abode’s landing/patio. It greets me as I walk out in the morning, and when I get home. I love it! Totally worth the $5.00!

  4. read this post yesterday, and went to buy a money plant after work. 🙂 I live in a small apt, so plants with lil light required are my go -toos’. Thanks for all the tips.

  5. Love the greenery. Where do you find your most realistic faux?

    1. Hi Emily. I purchase most of my faux greenery from Hobby Lobby, Ikea and Michael’s. 😀

  11. I am off to hunt a fiddle leaf fig, too, Jacki! I love the idea of putting it by a bright sunny window as if that is what’s keeping it so green/healthy! Love this and your many ideas, Suzy! Thanks!!!
