Red is making a comeback in a big way at my house this year!  I had pretty much banished it from my Christmas decor after using it for so many years, during my Tuscan phase.  What was I thinking???   😀   But, as soon as I spied some tartan plaid Christmas plates, that I used in my Christmas Breakfast Nook, I was hooked on red for Christmas once again!

I kept my wreath simple by only adding a cute Nordic sweater garland (from Kirkland’s) to it.  The garland is repeated down on the mantel, where it is mixed in with the greenery.  Cute, squatty, little trees (from Hobby Lobby) flank the “Have Yourself A Merry Little Christmas sign (also from Kirkland’s).  Have yourself a Merry Little Christmas sign on the decorated mantel.Pin

The shutters and large architectural piece pretty much stay on the mantel all the time, which makes decorating so much easier!  For my Fall Mantel, I added another layer with the board that the wreath and sign are hanging from and left if here for Christmas.  Grapevine wreaths, mini Christmas trees and decorative window shutters are on the mantel.Pin

The shutters make a great backdrop for twig wreaths, with a Christmas ornament hanging in the middle, and red Christmas lanterns (from Hobby Lobby).  When I was finished adding everything to the mantel, it seemed to still be missing something.  Once I added the felt ball garland in red white and green (from Target), I realized that was just what it needed!

For the last several years, I’ve tried to do something different on my mantel – something a little non-traditional.  But, I never have enjoyed it quite as much as this year’s version.  Christmas red and green just might be here to stay at my house!

The tartan plaid dishes, that I referred to earlier, set the tone for my Christmas decorating this year.  The shelves in my breakfast nook were the first to be decorated for Christmas and that theme carried into my family room!

  10. Stopping by from Sunday’s Best. I love your Christmas décor. The mantel is my favorite, but I do love the plaid on the tree. It really gives the room a country feel. Thanks for sharing.

I love your décor this year. Although the other participants have some beautiful rooms, there is nothing as heartwarming as the traditional red and green for Christmas.

  12. I really need to know how to achieve the shutter look. How do I make those and what color is on your shutters on the mantel? I love them!!!

    1. Hi Rhonda. The shutters are painted with Rustoleum spray paint in Anodized Bronze. Are you asking how I attached the twig wreaths to them for Christmas? If so, I threaded a strip of plaid ribbon through the twine string hanger that was already on a Christmas ornament. I then looped the ribbon around the wreath. I used a thumbtack in the top of the shutter to attach is to the shutter. Please let me know if this isn’t what you’re asking! 😀

      1. Rhonda Knuppel says:

        Hi Suzy,
Just to clarify the color on the shutters as being Anodized Bronze. I am hoping that I asked about the correct shutter. I just came across a prior blog about your bi-fold doors that you cut apart. They are on your mantel. These are the ones that I wanted the color that you used. It may still be the Anodized Bronze, but I wanted to make sure we are talking about the same thing and I feared that I may have asked about shutters instead of the cut bi-fold doors. It looks more greyish in color in the picture on the internet.

        1. Hi Rhonda. Anodized Bronze seems like a weird name for a gray color, but that’s what these are painted with. The shutters on the mantel are a part of the bi-fold doors that I cut apart. I also used a couple of them on the wall in my dining room, which you can see here: http://www.worthingcourtblog.com/dining-room-before-after/ . Hope this helps!

Thank you so very much!! I’m going to see if I can find those at Home Depot and pick up the paint as well. I’m so excited about redoing things in my home and I just love your website. I am not too décor savvy, but you are teaching me. I’m forever grateful.

  13. I love every single thing about your space! It really is just gorgeous and dreamy 🙂 Thanks for sharing it with us at Funtastic Friday!
