The decorating trends for 2024 are less about conforming to a specific look and more about personal expression and comfort.

This post just might surprise you, but first I have a question…do you keep up with the latest decorating trends?

For more years than I care to admit, I tried to keep up with current trends when decorating my home. It was exhausting and could be very expensive!

If you find yourself in the same boat, I have great news for you! You can relax. Read on to see what I mean.

Several rooms in my house are in the process of being redecorated, but we’ll use them for examples.

What’s In for 2024

Personal Storytelling Through Decor

I you want your home to be a reflection of you and your family, think of it as a place to display unique bits and pieces that spark memories or inspire your dreams.

For instance – the china cabinet turned office cabinet is filled with all sorts of things that appeal to both my husband and me.

We love to shop in consignment stores and this cabinet is filled with many of the office-type treasures that we’ve collected.

In essence, decorating in a way that tells your personal story is about creating a home that isn’t just pretty to look at.

It’s more creating a home that is deeply meaningful and uniquely yours. It’s a celebration of your journey, your life, and everything that makes you, you.

Bringing Out Your Inner Maximalist

Now this 2024 decorating trend is one that I can get behind! It’s a style that’s all about ‘more is more’ and is so much fun to talk about! It’s about filling your space with things that you absolutely love.

Imagine walking into a room that’s just bursting with personality. Every corner, every wall, tells a different story.

But here’s the thing – maximalism isn’t just about cramming stuff into a room. It’s an art. There’s a method to the madness. It’s about creating a space that isn’t just visually stimulating but is also cohesive and thoughtfully curated.

Each piece in a maximalist room has its place and purpose, even if it’s just to bring a smile to your face.

And the best part? Maximalism is for those who believe their home should be as vibrant and dynamic as their lives, a canvas that continually evolves with their passions, memories, and dreams.

So, if you’re someone who can’t pick just one favorite color, style, or pattern, why choose? Maximalism says you can have them all, and it’s glorious!

Emphasis on Emotional Comfort

This 2024 trend is all about creating a home that doesn’t just look good but feels good, right down to your soul.

Imagine stepping into a room and feeling an immediate sense of peace and comfort wash over you. It’s like the room just gets you.

The colors are soothing, there’s a plush throw waiting for you on the couch, and maybe there’s a little nook by the window with a cushy armchair – your perfect spot for morning coffee or losing yourself in a good book.

Emotional comfort in decor is about personalizing your space to be your sanctuary. But it’s not just about the senses.

Emotional comfort also means surrounding yourself with things that have meaning to you. Maybe it’s family photos that bring back happy memories or artwork that inspires you.

It’s creating a home that nurtures you, supports you, and provides a comforting backdrop to your life’s ups and downs.

In today’s fast-paced world, our homes are our retreats. They’re where we recharge, reflect, and just be ourselves. So, making sure our spaces cater to our emotional needs is super important.

Incorporating Vintage or Thrifted Pieces

One of the hottest trends this year is the incorporation of vintage or thrifted pieces into the furnishings and decor in your home. In 2024 it’s become all about blending the old with the new.

In case you haven’t noticed, consignment stores, Facebook Marketplace, and thrift stores have skyrocketed in popularity.

They’ve become go-to destinations for those of us seeking pieces to add personality and charm to their homes. Not to mention that items found in those types of places are almost always more affordable (and better quality) than purchasing new.

No matter what decorating style you prefer, you can find something that works. It may take a bit of digging, but the thrill of the hunt is half the fun!

It’s about building a home that not only looks good but also has a soul, a narrative, and a bit of time-traveled charm. In short, it’s about making the old new again, and loving every quirky, mismatched, story-filled piece of it!

Elevating the Everyday

I simply love this idea of turning those ordinary, everyday moments into something special and extraordinary.

Think about it – why should luxury or beauty be reserved only for special occasions? This trend says, let’s make every day a bit more magical.

So, how does this look in practice? It’s in the little things.

It’s about swapping out those plain, everyday dishes for your good china that make even a simple Tuesday night dinner feel like a feast.

Pull out your grandmother’s silver and use it! What good is it doing sitting in a cabinet waiting for a special occasion?

This trend is really about mindfulness and appreciation for the small things.

Elevating the every day is a celebration of life’s simple pleasures. It’s a reminder that you don’t need a special occasion to enjoy a bit of luxury.

By making every moment, no matter how small, a little more special, we can transform our day-to-day living from mundane to beautiful.

What’s Out for 2024

Asking for Everyone Else’s Opinion

This shift is really about having confidence in your own style. Gone are the days of worrying about what everyone else will think.

In its place is embracing the idea that your home should be a reflection of you, not someone else’s opinion.

The beauty of this trend is in its empowerment. It encourages confidence, creativity, and individuality in home decor.

No more second-guessing if that quirky lamp you adore is too outlandish or if your love for vibrant colors is too bold. It’s your space, your sanctuary, and it should echo your personality, quirks and all.

This doesn’t mean you can’t seek inspiration or advice, but the final say should always be yours.

So, say goodbye to decorating by committee and hello to a space that’s authentically, unapologetically you.

Notice how I’ve included only one “Out for 2024”? That’s because what’s truly in, and is forever timeless, is having confidence in your own decorating!

We’re all embracing the idea that our homes should be an extension of ourselves, so there’s this wonderful, growing confidence in expressing personal style.

Gone are the days of anxiously flipping through design magazines or endlessly scrolling through social media, worrying if our decor is trendy or ‘Instagram-worthy’.

It’s all about trusting your own instincts and loving the choices you make for your space.

Think about it – your home is your personal canvas, a place where you can experiment, have fun, and let your personality shine.

To sum it all up, the mantra for 2024 decorating trends is: trust your gut, decorate with heart, and let your home be a true reflection of you. After all, when you’re confident in your decorating choices, it really shows, and that’s a style that’s always in.

  1. Most folks like their homes “fuller” than I do. Makes them happy so I’m happy for them
But even well done maximalist makes my inner compass swirl off kilter.

    1. Haha. I totlly get it! I think it’s so interesting how each of us feel about maximallism and being surrounded by stuff.

    2. I have 5 lifelong friends that come and stay with me once a year for a girls weekend and 4 of them love my home. The other gal loves being here but some of my most curated and collected rooms make her actually physically twitch! 😂 we always have to laugh. her home is lovely and streamlined.

Suzy, you are spot-on, as usual! Surround yourself with what YOU love!!

    1. Exactly! Do that and you’ll always be happy with your home. 😀

  3. Many have told us our home is like a museum, full of family history, treasures and stories. We have slept in a full size antique bed until recently we had to have it enlarged to a queen so our 11 year old weim can find a place with us. Our guests still must sleep in the full size antique bed that was a wedding gift from my parents.

  4. I couldn’t agree more with this post. I feel like this is the way I’ve always decorated and the trends have finally caught up with it. Your office looks fantastic! Looking forward to hearing more about it.

    1. I’m so glad that we’re seeing a return to pretty in the world of home decor! I’m glad to hear that you agree! I’ll do an “official” office reveal when it’s completed.

Hi, I absolutely love that wall panel with the parrots and birds. It’s breathtaking, and I drool over it each time you show a photo of your lovely living room. It gives enough of the botanical wall papers trend without having to comment to an entire room or wall. It’s just fabulous!! I am on the hunt for something like it. I like your sense of timeless tradition with lots of flair and color. You have a very comfortable stylish living space and I really enjoy your posts. Thank you for sharing your ideas and inspirations.

    1. Carol Sorth says:

Opps I meant to say commit to an entire wall, not comment.

    2. Hi Carol. Thank you so much for your sweet and thoughtful comment! I’m glad to hear that you’re enjoying everything.
