Traditional Christmas Living Room Decor
Ideas for a traditional Christmas-decorated living room, combining red and green tartan plaid ribbon and ornaments with beautiful blue and white chinoiserie accents.
Picture this: a living room at Christmas where the coziness of tradition meets the elegance of chinoiserie.
A living room that’s like a holiday hug when you walk in, making you feel all warm and fuzzy inside. With patterns mixing and mingling among the twinkling lights and greenery, this setup screams ‘Tis the Season’ in the best possible way!
I’ve gone all out with a classic theme using red and green tartan plaid, mixed with timeless blue and white chinoiserie touches.

TIP: Red and green is the number one traditional Christmas color scheme. Add touches of blue and white to give your old decor a fresh, updated look.

Welcome to my festive living room, all decked out for Christmas!
We recently completed repairs due to a water leak that caused us to have to vacate the first floor of our home so that the hardwood floors could be refinished. I took the opportunity to rearrange the furniture in the room.
The new furniture arrangement, coupled with the changes that I’ve been making in my decorating style, have things looking quite a bit different in here than they did last year.
It has taken me over two years to come full circle – leaving farmhouse decorating style and returning to my beloved traditional decorating style.
Several things are still in the works, such as window treatments, but I’ll get there eventually.
Through the redecorating of this room, the hubs and I have discovered a love for consignment shopping! We love to go poking around consignment stores near us and have found so many wonderful treasures.
The only new items in this redecorated room are the blue recliners and a much-adored antelope rug. Everything else either came from my stash, was found in a consignment shop, or was purchased on Facebook Marketplace.
You’ll see that my Christmas decorations in this room are a bit scaled back. Gone are the days of placing decorations on every.single.surface in the room!
I kept much of the decor that was already in the room and just added holiday touches here and there.
On the mantel, the pair of blue and white vases and Staffordshire dogs, that you may have seen in last year’s spring tour, are still in place, but are sporting a bounty of red berry and magnolia stems.
TIP: Use plain Christmas ornaments to tone down areas that have a large dose of one color concentrated in one area.
A small boxwood wreath hanging from a red ribbon on a large ginger jar carries the colors down onto the hearth, but is still simple in style.
The accessories on the coffee table stayed the same too, with the exception of the addition of a couple of Christmas dishes.
More magnolia leaves and evergreen branches replaced the faux mums that filled the large blue and white bowl in the center of the table during the fall.
The colors in the arrangement compliment the screen hanging behind the couch, which is a focal point when you enter the living room from our kitchen/breakfast room area.
And of course, no Christmas living room would be complete without a Christmas tree!
I love its new spot in the corner between the entertainment center and the console table.
For the last 8 years, it resided in front of double French doors and was so, so hard to photograph.
The large chinoiserie urn that the tree is in was a bit of a splurge on my part, but I’ll use it year-round.
A Christmas tree now and then large plants during the rest of the year!
I learned from Christmas tree decorating experts, that the first part of the tree to be decorated should be the topper.
Once I have the topper in place, the rest of the tree comes together pretty easily, even when I’m not sure how I want to decorate the rest of it when I’m just getting started.
The tree is filled with all sorts of chinoiserie type ornaments.
Small Churchill Blue Willow saucers, picked up for a song at a consignment shop, hang from plate hangers.
The rest of the ornaments are from Hobby Lobby, Kirklands, a local home decor store, and from my own stash.
The inspiration for the entire tree came from the tartan plaid ribbon (from Michaels) and the large plaid ornaments from Raz.
And lastly, the entire look is pulled together with the most prettiest chinoiserie wrapping paper.
I mean, how cute are those pagodas?!?
TIP: Tie the tree in with the rest of the room by using everyday decor items around the base of the tree.
