Today, I’m excited to share seven tried and true transformative tips that will breathe personality and character into every corner of your home.

Integrating Vintage with Modern Decor

Integrating vintage and modern decor creates a lively conversation between past and present in your home.

For example, place a lamp with sleek modern lines on a vintage end table, right beside a a sofa with an eastern-inspired vintage screen hanging above it and watch the magic happen!

The way you embrace this concept in your own home may be different, but essence is the same.

You’ll be telling your home’s unique story by creating a space that feels collected, not merely decorated. It’s about crafting a home that is timeless yet refreshingly modern.

A few years ago, I fully embraced the farmhouse style, filling my home with neutral colors, rustic wooden accents, and vintage farmhouse-inspired decor.

I enjoyed it very much, but as time passed, I began to feel as though something wasn’t quite “me” about my surroundings.

And then I realized what it was.

While looking through old pictures, it dawned on me that by embracing the whitewashed, rustic, neutral palette, I had left my love of color and the character of traditional decor behind.

I decided it was time to revive and reintroduce those traditional elements, but in a fresh new way.

It all started with the makeover of my breakfast room, where small changes added up to a profound new look.

From there, the changes slowly began to spread throughout the rest of my home. With each change, my home began to feel more and more like a reflection of my true self.

For the last few years, I’ve been intentionally blending modern pieces with old to create a fresh take on traditional style that is both new and wonderfully familiar.

And I learned a valuable lesson along the way: true style doesn’t come from following trends, but from decorating in a way that resonates with your own soul.

Incorporating Unique Textiles in Home Design

The possibilities are endless when using unique textiles for home decorating!

Throw pillows, area rugs, draperies, furniture, and wall coverings can change the feel of a room dramatically.

  • Anything velvet, such as pillows or draperies. Velvet has a rich, luxurious touch and feel.
  • Anything linen is perfect for a casual, airy feel and is full nubby texture.
  • Silk can be shiny or smooth, but is a texture that always adds a sophisticated flair.
  • Embroidery, be it on pillows, draperies, or in the form of a tapestry.
  • Furniture with detail such a end tables, chests, and coffee tables made to look like bamboo or with intricate carvings.
  • Textured wallpaper, such as grasscloth, will add wonderful subtle texture to an entire room.

These may all be functional elements in a room, but any one of them will add that instant personality you crave.

Consider the antelope print area rug in my living room and hallway.

Its presence is both bold and understated. There’s a certain magic in how the rug is eye-catching with lots of personality, yet also blends almost seamlessly with the rest of the room.

It may take a bit of bravery on your part, but incorporating such unique textiles is a wonderful way to express your personal style.

Add Pops of Color

I hope you embrace colorful home decorating ideas because life is too short for dull spaces. Whether in large doses or with small touches, a splash of color will take a room from ho-hum to stunning.

What better way to showcase your zest for life, so let’s decorate those spaces with vibrant hues of joy!

If color is small doses is more your vibe, start out small. Add a simple colorful flower arrangement in a cheery color to brighten an entire room as well as your spirits.

Or add colorful pillows to a neutral sofa or chair.

If you’re comfortable with more, consider sprinkling colorful elements throughout your rooms.

Color not only complements a space but also sets a mood, tells a tale, and invites a smile. Each choice is a chapter in the story of your home’s personality, each hue a character that enlivens the plot.

So, let’s not shy away from color. Instead, let’s embrace it with open arms. After all, in a world full of color, why would we ever choose to live in black and white?

Strategic Lighting to Enhance the Atmosphere

Using strategic lighting to set the mood is crucial and is an often overlooked element that not only shapes the room, it sets the ambiance, and can even influence how we feel.

The soft glow from a table lamp can add intimate personality to a room, while a bold statement piece overhead can dazzle and uplift. Don’t be afraid to mix lighting styles either—it’s all about creating layers that light up your life.

When giving my dining room its makeover, I didn’t want just another pretty dining room. I wanted a room that exuded personality.

Oh, I could easily have gone with a traditional crystal or brass chandelier, but where’s the freshness and personality in that?

My much-loved pagoda chandelier (affiliate link) does more than light up the room; it adds a pop of understated fun and is an eye-catching conversation piece. It’s a deliberate choice that adds personality to the entire room.

This is just one example of how a carefully chosen light fixture can go beyond function to significantly elevate the mood and style of any room.

Accessorizing to Add Instant Personality to Your Home

Did you know you can add instant personality with home accessories? The right pieces ensure your home is filled with charm and character.

Accessories are another layer of decor that is a reflection of your tastes and experiences, so be intentional with your choices.

When well chosen, items such as vases, sculptures, and collectibles can even serve as focal points.

A quirky lamp along with fun artwork adds loads of fun personality to an otherwise boring corner of my home.

You can even create character in the way that artwork is grouped on a wall.

Or you can add character and personality with a display of favorite plates above a simple sideboard.

When you incorporate accessories that aren’t just something that matches the colors in the room, but are actually things that you love, you are truly allowing personality to shine in your home!

Personalizing Your Home with Simple DIY Projects

DIY projects allow you to personalize your home in the most hands-on way possible.

I only have the most rudimentary carpentry skills. I can wield a mean drill and use a chop saw, but that’s about it.

DIY home decor projects easy enough for me (and you!) with only the most basic skills:

There’s so much more, but suffice it to say – the more you flex those diy muscles, the easier it gets!

Bringing the Outdoors In

Have you ever spent any time outdoors and thought, “boy, how boring it looks out here”? Of course not! There’s nothing boring about the beauty of God’s marvelous creation.

So take a cue from nature. If your home’s personality is feeling stale, give it a breath of fresh air by bringing a bit of the outdoors in.

Embracing ways to bring the outdoors inside is transformative for living spaces, making it vibrant and alive.

A potted plant here, an artificial tree there – there’s something about blurring the lines between inside and out to make your home feel vibrant and alive.

Other ways to bring the outdoors in:

  • Maximize the natural light by throwing open those draperies and blinds. Rooms with no natural light can be very depressing and void of personality if not very carefully put together.
  • Incorporate items made with natural materials. Even small items, such as bamboo picture frames or marble coasters add a natural element.
  • Display nature-inspired artwork featuring landscapes, seascapes, or botanicals. This also includes wallpaper.
  • Incorporate a color palette inspired by the outdoors. Earth tones will add warmth, bright colors can feel tropical, while hues of blue and green might have a coastal vibe.

Whether you choose to blend vintage and modern, color, textiles, or many of the other ways to add personality to your home, remember to stay intentional.

Each choice you make is a reflection of your unique style and vision.

Let your home not just be a place to live, but a reflection of who you are and what you love.

  1. I have long admired a bird print that is in the first pic of this post…. has green mat and gold frame and is hanging above white piece of furniture….appears to be in your dining room. Could you tell me if it’s available for purchase, please? I’ve done a Google Search on it but found no matches. It’s so lovely and such gorgeous colors. Thank you.

  2. Of all the blogs I subscribe to, yours is my favorite. The way you combine colors and even styles is fresh and new. I also love your blue details as that is my favorite color. Green is a close second. I am a senior woman who lives in an apartment but I love decorating and look forward daily to your posts. Thank you so much.

  3. Your home is lovely, but seems a bit crowded with accessories. There is no central focal point, but yes, lots of colors! If you enjoy the atmosphere, then just remember my comments only reflect my own style. Certainly brings Spring to mind after this cold snowy winter!
